چکیده

Cross-linked polyethylene has been explored as an alternative to conventional polyethylene in total joint replacement in order to reduce wear volume and decrease failure through polyethylene wear debris induced osteolysis [1]. Due to the demands of a total knee replacement, moderately cross-linked polyethylene is recommended to retain mechanical properties [2]. This study aims to investigate the wear performance of a new moderately cross-linked polyethylene in a fixedbearing knee configuration through experimental wear simulation.

The effect of insert conformity and material on total knee replacement wear

The mean average life is increasing; therefore, there is a need to increase the lifetime of the prostheses. To fulfil this requirement, new prosthetic designs and materials are being introduced. Two of the design parameters that may affect wear of total knee replacements, and hence the expected lifetime, are the insert conformity and material. Computational models have been used extensively for...

The influence of simulator input conditions on the wear of total knee replacements: An experimental and computational study

Advancements in knee replacement design, material and sterilisation processes have provided improved clinical results. However, surface wear of the polyethylene leading to osteolysis is still considered the longer-term risk factor. Experimental wear simulation is an established method for evaluating the wear performance of total joint replacements. The aim of this study was to investigate the i...

A comprehensive combined experimental and computational framework for pre-clinical wear simulation of total knee replacements

A more robust pre-clinical wear simulation framework is required in order to simulate wider and higher ranges of activities, observed in different patient populations such as younger more active patients. Such a framework will help to understand and address the reported higher failure rates for younger and more active patients (National_Joint_Registry, 2016). The current study has developed and...

Effect of Polyethylene Crosslinking and Bearing Design on Wear of Unicompartmental Arthroplasty.

Wear and polyethylene damage continue to be important factors affecting outcomes of unicompartmental knee arthroplasty. We compared two design rationales for unicompartmental arthroplasty: fully congruent mobile bearings; or moderately conforming fixed bearings using experimental and computational wear simulation. Experimental wear rates were 3.89 (±0.12) mg/million cycles for the highly crossl...

Comparison of Wear in Fixed and Mobile Bearing Knee Designs

Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) remains the only bearing surface of choice in total knee replacements (TKR). While excellent medium term results can be found for knee replacements at ten years, there remains concerns about wear debris induced osteolysis in the longer term, particularly in young and more active patients. It has been shown previously that the wear of fixed beari...
